Kenmore & District Historical Society Books

The Kenmore & District Historical Society is committed to preserving and sharing the history of our district. To this end we have published a number of Kenmore history books to preserve the stories of our district in print. The first book in our collection is the Kenmore pictorial history. All books published by KDHS are all available in local council libraries or to purchase. A brief description of each book is shown below with an order form at the bottom of the page should you wish to purchase a copy.

The original version of this book was created by local historian Libby Wager in 1988. It has been republished by the Kenmore & District Historical Society in 2019 with some new and improved photos and some additional text. The project was undertaken in close collaboration between the author and KDHS Committee Member, John Carter.

A number of history groups from Toowong to Kenmore and Oxley to Richlands have collaborated to produce a local history of how, when and why Brisbane’s western suburbs developed. The book was coordinated through a virtual group called Brisbane History West. The book contains a context history as well as a number of short stories to highlight themes. These stories were written by various volunteers from the history groups.

William Pacey’s Diary

William (Billy) Pacey died of wounds on a hospital ship off Gallipoli on 25 August 1915. Billy kept a diary which was printed in 1993. The family gave the Kenmore & District Historical Society permission to reproduce the diary to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli in 2015.

The Kenmore War Memorial

In this publication the KDHS has endeavoured to tell the story of the War Memorial and of the 79 soldiers named. This memorial has been a significant landmark in Kenmore for almost 100 years and it honours the men from this local area who served in WWI, the Boer War and other conflicts. It was published in 2018 as a commemorative book for the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

Kenmore & District – A Pictorial History (Second Edition)

In this, our first publication, we chose a Kenmore pictorial history of 80 photos and explanatory captions. The information in the captions come from a combination of research and oral history. With the evocative photos, we hope that readers will enjoy finding out more about the past of this place called Kenmore.

Preserving History

Finding out and sharing the history of Kenmore and district helps provide a sense of continuity for a busy suburban community. Whilst not everyone wants to immerse themselves in historic research, most people are really interested to find out how the suburb operated as a farming community until the housing estates commenced in the 1950s. And, others who have lived in Kenmore for decades have a strong role in sharing their memories and photographs of life in the then ‘outer suburb’.

Kenmore and District Historical Society hopes to achieve on-going preservation and presentation of this history.
